The Tastiest Partnership: Copywriting for Blue Raspberry Design

Let’s take it alllll the way back to July 27th 2021.

The day everything changed.

This was the first time Amy Greenwald and I ever spoke face-to-virtual-face.

We’d been running in the same circles for a while.

You know, the world-changing, big-hearted, wild woman circles.

But we hadn’t gotten to know each other in a meaningful way…yet.

That first conversation helped both of us realize - Hey! There are other people like me who are just as awkward on Zoom calls!

But it was also the beginning of something much more.

Keep reading to find out how our creative story of friendship, Buffy, T-Swift, and the juiciest design/copy combo came to be…

The Client

Amy Greenwald is changing the world - one spunky brand design at a time.

She works with the dreamers and the do-gooders. The ones who are ruled by compassion. They have an ever-burning fire in their hearts to make things better for the people and planet.

She’s also a huuuuge Taylor Swift fan and is solely responsible for turning yours truly into one, too.

And, in case you’re curious, I returned the favour by converting Amy into a fan of a certain vampire-slaying Sunnydale resident whose name rhymes with Snuffy.

She’s also a Magic: The Gathering fan. I’ve still never played. But when Amy told me about her love of this tactical card game, I came up with the perfect metaphor for the work we’ve been doing together:

From the very start, all the magic of the Blue Raspberry brand was already within Amy. As her copywriter, I’m just the one shuffling the deck.

And this is what I try to bring to every copywriting project - I help you tap into that unique magic already within you, pull it out, and put it into words your dreamies will adore.

“I wanted to know where my website stood with its copy and gain clarity on my own brand voice.

When it came time to hire a copywriter, I didn't even have to search. I'd been following Robyn for a while and just knew she was who I'd work with if I ever needed a copywriter. And hiring her was the BEST decision.”

The Copy Consult

(Now known as The Copy Beast)

When Amy came to me a few months after that first coffee chat, ready to get my eyes on her copy, I wasn’t prepared.

That is, I wasn’t prepared to fall in love with her and her brand the way I did! Sounds cheesy, I know. But I’m a cheesy gal through and through. #SorryNotSorry.

Reading Amy’s responses to my research questionnaires I realized this: She’s “my people”.

That feeling? It’s rare.

And I don’t for one minute take for granted how lucky I am to land a client like her.

“I've never worked with a copywriter before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. But Robyn was phenomenal at getting to the bottom of my voice and making recommendations for my copy.

Her questionnaires were incredibly helpful - not only for giving her info but for finding clarity myself!

Before even having the Copy Consult I felt empowered and more knowledgeable on what my own brand should sound like.”

But what else I wasn’t prepared for?

How little of Amy, the real Amy, the Amy that made me laugh out loud, rollover-on-my-bed-giggling as I read through her questionnaire responses, was showing up in her website copy.

It was like her copy had been written by a whole other person. Not her. Where was she? Where was her voice?

Amy’s not the only one who’s been victim to corporate-speak conditioning, or the years of essay-perfect verbiage so many of us were forced to adopt in school.

I see it all the time. And it makes for forgettable copy.

“Anyone who can make puns or talk about what they do in an unusual way is going to be a good time to work with. and Robyn was SO FUN to work with.

She made ripping my copy apart limb from limb an enjoyable experience.

(I kid, she was actually very sweet about it.)”

I did indeed rip her copy apart. But Amy took it like a champ.

And after that?

She felt - and continues to feel - more equipped to show up as her full self whenever she sits down to write for Blue Raspberry Design.

“CLARITY!! I've gained the most clarity on my brand and who I want to talk to. Her Copy Consult put my rebrand into warp speed because of the clarity it brought.

I didn't expect to learn how easy it is to spot both good and bad copy in my own work. I was blown away by the attention to detail and the level of analysis I received. Robyn over-delivered on my expectations.

I cringe at old things I wrote and now know I can do better with the tools Robyn provided.”

The Best Deal Ever

After her Copy Consult/Copy Beast Experience, Amy fully intended to write her new web copy herself. But as she was also rebranding her business herself and redesigning her own website (by the way, did I mention she’s an absolute BADASS?!) she felt overwhelmed at the thought of doing ALL. THE. THINGS. As you might expect!

We chatted some more, and as luck or fate would have it, my own website had been languishing in no-man’s land for months. I was dying to rebrand Echo + Scribe and finally get my site back up and running with the new vibes I had in mind.

“The only obstacle I had was money...but not because Robyn’s services are priced too high.

I just didn't have a lot of capital to invest.

Copywriting is an investment that I just didn't have a lot of - but her Copy Consult service made it so accessible to work with her!”

So, we struck the deal of the century! A trade.

I’d write Amy’s web copy and she would rebrand and design a new digital home for Echo + Scribe.* Huzzah!

Writing Amy’s copy was honestly the most fun I’ve ever had writing copy.

And what made it so deliciously enjoyable?

Amy had already landed on a sweet theme for her brand. Like a kid in a candy store, this theme had me hyped up big time.

*On a personal note - I’m utterly in love with what Amy’s done for my brand and website. But this post ain’t about that, we’re talking ‘bout Blue Raspberry Design!

The Copywriting Tip: Write With a Theme in Mind

What I love most about Amy’s brand - and I love everrrrythinnnnnggg about it! - is that she’s not afraid to be different.

There are a ton of badass planet & people-loving warriors out there who are making the world a better place just by existing.

But finding someone who has such strong values, who walks their talk, all while proudly showing their unique personality is like finding the prize at the bottom of the cereal box. A thrill and a JOY!

Amy’s new brand design centered around everything sweet’n’tasty. The copy flowed from my fingertips with ease because she was already hella clear about what she wanted, and she let me unleash my creativity with pun-fueled abandon.

If you’re struggling to write your copy in a fun-to-read way, try experimenting with a theme.

It’s a nifty way of approaching heavier subjects - like sustainability and ethics - in a funky-fresh way that delights your dreamies. You might discover the perfect fit for your brand. And who knows, it might help you land on a yummy new brand design, too!

In Amy’s case, the idea behind the design came first, but as I wrote the copy, my words helped Amy source the most perfectly tempting images to enhance what we wanted to say. This project was a killer example of copy and design working side-by-side, creatively and strategically informing each other along the way. a.k.a. THE DREAM.

Just because you’re serious about making the world a better place, doesn’t mean your copy - or design - has to be boring.

The biggest thing we had to communicate about Blue Raspberry Design was Amy’s values. Compassion. Sustainability. Resilience. Wholeheartedness.

Instead of just listing her values out and mentioning them once, I wove them throughout her copy, always in a fun, conversational way.

Even on her eco policy page - such pages can be notoriously stuffy and overly formal - we kept the theme going strong. So folks reading this key info would keep paying attention and remember what she’s all about.

And THIS is what great copy and messaging does - it sticks to your teeth - and heart and mind - in all the right ways.

Go peep her juicy site for yourself.

Amy from Blue Raspberry Design says: Yessss!!! Have so much loved working with you on all the things!! And to anyone reading this, if you're looking for a badass copywriter to convey your voice and not skimp on the personality - HIRE ROBYN!!

The Green Web Design Launch

And the treats? They kept on comin’.

At the beginning of 2023, Amy did something UTTERLY AMAZING. She launched a whole damn course all about Green Web Design. I told you she was a badass.

Launching a course is no small feat. And Amy did a kick-ass job writing the copy for the course pages herself. I stepped in to do a quick copy-edit, but honestly, there wasn’t a whole lot that needed tweaking because Amy had really taken onboard everything she’d learned during our Copy Consult back in December 2021.

I did, however, help get the word out there for her. Enter… launch emails, bébé!

Once again, writing for Amy almost didn’t feel like work at all. Because I knew her so well at this point and was totally smitten with the Blue Raspberry brand, crafting her launch emails was a breeze.

The Story Continues

But our tale is far from over.

When we’re not gushing over T-Swift’s latest announcement, or analyzing our vampire-riddled dreams together, we’re cooking up something new… just for you, dear reader.

Keep your peepers peeled and your fork at the ready - what’s coming is something so freakin’ delicious you’ll be drooling with dark delight.

‘Til then…

Get yourself a spoonful of green goodness over at Blue Raspberry Design.
