Bringing Ethically Conscious Branding Online

If I’ve learned anything since starting my own business, it’s the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people.

When you’re working solo day-in, day-out, it’s so easy to feel isolated. Having other badass business owners to turn to - whether it’s for a quick uplifting chat or to bounce ideas off of - can make all the difference. Suddenly you’re reminded that you’re not alone in this wild life as an entrepreneur.

When you work with inspiring humans, you get inspired. It’s that simple.

I can’t remember exactly how our paths crossed, but something immediately drew me to Rebecca Sweet. (Hint: Her name doesn’t let her down one bit.)

Since we first *virtually* met, we’ve enjoyed Zoom conversations and email chains in a way that has always felt like catching up with a dear friend.

Talented as she is kind, Rebecca is the founder of RSweet Design, an ethically conscious branding studio based in the UK.

Earlier this year I had the pleasure of creating two new blogs for Rebecca: How to Know When it’s Time to Rebrand and Eco Packaging Solutions to Boost Your Skincare Brand

We’ve also been collaborating on design and copywriting projects for shared clients, and we’re in the process of putting together some different packages that will incorporate our combined skills.

There’s also something very exciting in the works for Rebecca and her business, which will be coming to all of you in the new year, and I’m thrilled to be involved… so watch this space for some big news soon!

Without further ado, here’s Rebecca… enjoy!

I’d love to know the story behind RSweet Design! How did you get started?

I started thinking about becoming freelance at my old agency job. I was fed up with static office life, having little freedom, and working for big corporates who didn’t care about sustainability. I saw boxes and boxes of unrecyclable print work leave the office and it made me think about ways I could do it in a more ethically conscious way.

How has your business transformed since you began? What’s the journey been like so far?

I have been going for about a year now and the biggest difference is in the rate of referrals and word of mouth work I get now. I’ve also been able to raise my prices, but I still have a long way to go!

Describe your typical workday. Do you have any special routines?

My typical workday begins with a natural wake up. I even let myself snooze! Then I grab a coffee for myself and my sister and we set up for the day in our home office. We have really been trying to get lunchtime yoga in, too, as I really feel this helps my brain refocus when I get lethargic or have creative blocks.

What was your number one driving motivation for starting your own business?

My number one was wanting to be my own boss and handle my own shit. Freedom was also a huge deal as I was planning to go travelling whilst working, but obviously I am just having to settle for googling my dream locations at the moment!

How did your sustainability journey begin? And how do you incorporate your values into your business?

My sustainability journey began about 4 years ago after watching Blue Planet. I feel this documentary really did put the environment into perspective for a lot of people. To reduce waste in my business, I reuse paper and always go for the recycled options (paper, ink, banners). I also live sustainably, using products with little or no packaging from trusted companies.

What have been the highlights and challenges of your life as a creative entrepreneur so far?

A highlight would have to be making some connections with other amazing creative entrepreneurs. I feel like going alone has enabled me to meet people I never would have.

A challenge would be having to learn all about business including mindset around money and marketing. I’m still undercharging and this is something I’m still building up confidence with. It’s also quite difficult not getting a regular paycheck as you can get a bit nervous about where or when you will land your next freelance gig. This is getting easier to deal with as time goes on though.

Has there been a standout project you’ve worked on?

My fave project so far has been my work for Base+, a personalised skincare company based in London. I worked with the founder, Yasmin, when she was first setting up the company and I’ve loved watching the idea blossom into a full business. We’ve been featured in lots of cool articles and the team are absolutely smashing the skincare game!

What’s your favourite thing about being a designer/creative?

I love how rewarding it is. Creating someone a brand that they love and helps them make money is a great feeling, plus being creative is also my hobby, so it’s great to be able to make a living off something I love doing!

Describe what your ideal day/weekend off would look like.

I’m dreaming of going down to the beach and drinking cocktails in the sun with friends, but I feel like it’s going to be a while until this is possible! For now, I’ll settle for a socially distanced garden party.

What’s next for RSweet Design? What do you envision for the future of your business?

I want to continue growing my client base and figuring out my brand, my niche, what I am. For now, it’s just me, myself and I!
